In 1964, Fu-Chen Shih was a music teacher at a vocational school in Changhua County. One day the school was paving the school square with asphalt and he was taking a nap. When the child of a staff member, whose foot got asphalt on it, complained, “Asphalt, stuck my foot”, Fu-Chen Shih was inspired and spent 5 minutes creating “Asphalt” (Tiám-á-ka).
In 1993, “Big Nostrils” (Tōa Phīⁿ-khang) was about the nostrils of an entertainer, Cha-cha Peng. It was listed as the first designated song by the Children’s Group of National Student Folk Song Competition in 2001 and won the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Local Languages in 2013 by the Ministry of Education . The recording of Fu-Chen Shih teaching this song was widely circulated on the Internet.

‧ Born in Liucu Village, Huatan Township, Changhua County, Taiwan on November 29. Grandfather: Chi-chang Li, father: Yan-jing Li, mother: Jin-nian Shih, with ten siblings, as the seventh child. Originally named as Fu-chen Li.
1938 (4 yrs old)
‧Adopted by an uncle (lived in Yuanlin), surname changed to Shih. Adoptive mother (aunt): Li-tao Shih, grandmother: Hsu-tian Shih (she taught him how to recite “Dark Sky”). They went to Presbyterian Church.

‧On Sundays, learned the hymns of Sunday school in the chapel and visited grandparents of the foster mother’s family (grandfather Dao-sheng Li was a well-known doctor in the area and the elder of the church). “In Taiwan, over the past few decades, all Taiwanese, regardless of age, have heard of Taiwanese nursery rhymes created or composed by Mr. Fu-chen Shih. The number of nursery rhymes that he created was enormous, and the songs were generally popular. During the period of Martial Law, in schools, Taiwanese in daily conversations was strictly suppressed, not to mention teaching in Taiwanese instruction. Without Mr. Shih who introduced Taiwanese nursery rhymes to Boy Scout, Taiwanese might have disappeared. Today, on International Mother Language Day, we should remember what Mr. Shih has preserved for Taiwan.”
